Bernard Hill, 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Titanic' Actor, Dies at 79

Known for Playing King Théoden and Captain Edward Smith

British actor Bernard Hill, best known for his roles as King Théoden in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and Captain Edward Smith in "Titanic," has died at age 79. Hill's agent confirmed his death.

Hill's career spanned over four decades. He first gained recognition for his portrayal of Yosser Hughes in the 1982 BBC series "Boys from the Blackstuff," for which he won a BAFTA Award for Best Actor.

He went on to appear in numerous films, including "Gandhi" (1982), "The Killing Fields" (1984), "The Remains of the Day" (1993), and "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" (1999).

Hill's role as Captain Smith in "Titanic" (1997) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also received critical acclaim for his performance as King Théoden in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (2001-2003).

Hill's death is a loss to the film and television community. He will be remembered for his powerful performances and his ability to bring complex characters to life.
